Have and Have Nots: Photo ID

Today, I read an article on Slate about new voting laws that may block African Americans from voting.  The article stated that up to 25% of African American voters may not have a state issued photo ID.

I’ve worked in call centers and warehouses.  Through that experience, I have met people with no driver’s licenses.  Generally, they live in the city and use public transportation to get around.

Is a driver’s license a class symbol?  Does it represent the difference between someone with the money to buy, insure, and run a car and someone without money?
