Dinner tonight came with an order of melt-down. I gave Laura 2 choices on what to eat. She made a decision, I prepared the food, and she changed her mind. I tried coaxing, reasoning, threatening, but she stormed on and on about how she wanted something else to eat. I wasn’t willing to give in to her demands for a different dinner, and she wasn’t willing to eat what I made.
Since a direct approach was not working, I shifted tactics. I started to talk to Jason, telling him a story about how my mom made me eat eggs when I was a little girl. Laura stopped her tantrum and listened. She started to eat her dinner. The storm was over.
Stories help to reset Laura when she is past hearing any other words.
